Building professional excellence for future herd managers
Now in its 11th year, the Dairy Management Academy is an industry-leading training programme for herd managers, aspiring herd managers and leaders of the future. It covers all areas of dairy farm management, providing the skills people need to thrive in modern dairy farming.
Dairy Management Academy is designed to run alongside employment. The program will take you two years to complete and is comprised of eight intensive two-day modules, to teach you the latest in:
- Cow comfort & environment
- Forage production & utilisation
- From calf to cow – birth through to the transition period
- Nutrition and feeding
- Fertility, genetics & herd performance
- Financial management
- Staff management
At the end, there is the Final overview module, where you will apply your learnings. You will recommend improvements for a case study farm and develop a short report that outlines your future objectives.
Learn as you work
We design the course to fit alongside your full-time dairy farm work. We provide you with on-going mentoring, to help you to create a profitable and sustainable dairy enterprise on your farm.
Teaching is a blend of classroom-based theory along with practical on-farm demonstrations and assessments.
Your training will be comprehensive. It will include all aspects of larger herd management, including the latest techniques on how to manage and develop staff.
Overseas study tour
We also provide an overseas study tour. In the recent past, this has been to dairy farms either in Germany, Italy, Poland, or Denmark.
The advantages of graduating
By graduating from the Dairy Management Academy you will have demonstrated your ability to work to high professional standards and excellent levels of initiative, to improve your herd’s performance.

Why it pays to invest in your employees
No matter how highly capital-resourced your farm is, your most important asset is your employees. Without them, your farm cannot work optimally.
Our own data clearly shows that employees are twice as productive on our top-quartile farms as those at farms in the bottom 25%.
Ensure that you train your staff well and treat them correctly, so that they have the best knowledge and morale to help your business succeed.
The ability to attract good people and allow them to develop throughout their career is the key to unlocking the potential of investment in facilities and livestock.
“I have found the Dairy Management Academy to be a huge help in my role as herd manager. I have been able to bring back a huge amount of knowledge to the farm, helping to improve everything from herd health to efficiency. It has been a great highlight to meet other people in a similar job role and share our experiences.”
“I highly recommend the Dairy Management Academy as it gives you greater knowledge and understanding of the dairy industry. The course is extremely varied, covering all aspects from cow comfort to finance. Meeting different people and learning about different systems has been extremely valuable, providing me with a greater understanding of how to succeed my own family farm.’
