My career in agriculture began with a bachelor’s degree in animal science, at the University of Nottingham. I graduated in 2018 with a BSc (Hons), and then completed a PhD in improving UK heifer rearing efficiency.
Following my PhD studies I spent a year in New Zealand, gaining practical experience in calf rearing, sheep & beef farming. This included managing calves on two dairy farms and being given the accolade of regional “Calf Rearer of the Year”.
My passion for dairy led me to join Promar, in November 2023. As part of the Sustainability Team, I’m particularly interested in promoting the value of beef-on-dairy farming and advocating for climate-positive agriculture. For me, good youngstock management is crucial – it increases herd performance, which improves farm economics, but it also helps to reduce a business’s carbon footprint. Carbon footprints are a clear indicator of farm efficiency and productive performance.
I also really enjoy the data element of farming. Data is such a useful tool, that is helping all levels of the supply chain to make effective decisions, and to see the rationale behind them.
The most rewarding part of my job is having a direct impact on farms. I particularly enjoy on-farm discussions, and learning about farmers’ unique experiences, challenges, and views. I believe in a tailored approach, helping clients find sustainable solutions specific to their needs.
When I’m not working, you’ll likely find me on the hockey field, with horses, or out for a run.
